In this article we take a look back at the “Halo 3: Believe” ad campaign. As I go through the various ads for this campaign I’m compelled to come to only one conclusion; it was brilliant.
Halo3 is the third game in the Xbox exclusive Halo franchise. Every Halo launch has been a big event amongst the gamer audience, but the client wanted Halo3 to be more: an entertainment landmark. The Halo 3 ‘Believe’ campaign idea sought to reposition the protagonist of the Halo series as the hero and saviour of mankind. They built a vision of a future world, looking back on the events of the Halo wars, and humanity’s victory. Their specific task was to run a promotion in-cinemas, to engage consumers with the content of Halo 3 and build a true cultural connection.
What’s really unique about this approach is the ads positions the game as something real, something that happened, a part of our history. I think this was incredibly smart because if we think or feel it was real then buying the game would be like a commemoration of fallen heroes. It worked.
video management, video solution, video streamingAfter looking at the case study, there’s no doubt it worked. The most interesting fact was that it wasn’t targeting just Halo fans but those who’ve never heard of it. As a fan of Halo, I got excited because I couldn’t wait to re-live what the ads are talking about.
I never saw all the ad spots for Halo Believe campaign and if you didn’t in addition to never hearing about the game, you too would believe.
It’s been 2 years since these campaigns aired and they’re still powerful. I don’t believe we’ve seen anything like it before so I just wanted to take a look back and appreciate the creativity in one of my favourite ad campaigns.
