The Motorola Droid advertising campaign is in full effect and has got to be one of the hardest hitting ads I’ve seen to another competitor. I love it. It’s direct, it’s honest and it’s taking heavy shots at the iPhone. What’s wrong with that? I have to ask because this ad apparently struck a nerve especially with Apple’s loyal fans.

Droid Does
It shouldn’t. Doesn’t the Mac vs PC ad takes shot at PC about their vulnerabilities? We all loved that, laughed at it and enjoyed it for a period of time. Now that Motorola, as the underdog are taking those same shots Apple and no one should be annoyed. It’s fair game people.
If you’re a true Apple fan, this ad should excite you because it’ll keep Apple on their toes and hopefully pressure them to add some of these features. I’m hoping Motorola releases an ad that talks about customization on the iPhone because they don’t allow that. Competition is the key to innovation.
The most brilliant thing about this ad is that it uses Apple’s branding against them and I believe that’s what’s really hurting Apple. The ad starts with the clean white background against simple black fonts. The music is similar to what Apple uses in their ads. The result is that you stay with the ad thinking it’s something from Apple thus receiving the messaging. Suddenly you realize iPhone doesn’t allow a lot of stuff. Disappointment steps in and this is where Motorola steps in. Brilliant!
As a loyal consumer of Apple, after watching this you feel a little cheated.
Apple’s loyal fans are fighting back on their behalf and I can’t wait for Apple’s response. I hope it’s not another ad but a release of iPhone 4G with some of these features. The above video is smart and a good response. I especially like the ‘I don’t need a droid unless it’s R2D2‘ bit.Very funny.
As a fan, I don’t think the Droid is in anyway an iPhone killer. It’s survived bigger threats. The most this ad can do is give them buzz and a bit of the market share but I’d be stunned if it killed the iPhone because let’s not forget one thing here: all these other phones are mere imitations and for that reason they’ll always be one step behind Apple’s product. While they’re struggling to catch up with innovation, Apple’s next release is something that’ll put them 1 step ahead again. Even Apple’s competitors are waiting for their next product.
Hoping to see this war heats up with a series of good ads an hopefully Apple improving the iPhone giving a little more freedom to its loyal fans.
