NHS: Fight Back, A Gritty Ad

NHS Fight Back

I always tend to have a liking for social ads, I think they are the most creative ones because in my opinion they have to work a little harder to communicate their message. Why? Well we’re all interested in buying the next iPhone but are we really that interested in a cause like saving the planet? Not at the top of our list – let’s be honest.

With this ad the social cause is smoking among men. The idea in the ad is quite awakening. Would you stand there and let yourself be beaten up on the outside? No, you won’t so why let cigarettes do that on your inside? Fight back!

In the ad there’s a raw intensity, a no-holds bar atmosphere where you really see the details of this guy taking a beating. You feel each punch through the gritty graphic, the dark red blood spewing from his mouth and the sound really indicates the hurt of this man. I think it’s only at the end when the narrator says, “Smoke. Everybody takes a Beating” that most people would really get the message and at that point I’m 95% certain that your brain is replaying everything, thinking.. “is that what it’s like with smoking?”

I really think it communicates the message to the target audience but I think a smoker would be able to say better than I if this has any effect whether positive or negative. Feel free to comment and let me know.

  • I rather liked it -- creative and impacting.

Each punch and hit can be felt. It is very visceral.

I can see why some may denounce it due to its violence, but I think it really drives home the feeling of what one is doing to their body when they smoke.

It is one thing to nag at someone to quit smoking. Yes, it is annoying to be nagged about anything. However, it is another thing to make someone really think about what they are doing to themselves.

Perhaps they have been thinking about quitting and something like this will push to the point of finally making a conscious effort to quit.

  • well really nice ad but just too graphic, personally i think if someone wanted to smoke, let them, i use to smoke , just hated people telling me to quit, like wtf just leave me alone.

    but iv quit now...

    thanks

  • Si

Too much blood I think. It'll cause comment, but there will be a lot of talk about the excess of gore which might take some of the impact out of the intended message.
