I discovered Sushi & Robots last night and had to bookmark it for a quick critique today. This site is simply stunning and utilizes pure elitism in design here. The first beautiful thing about the design is the grid like texture in the background. Usually this can cause a design to become busy but in this case it’s perfectly executed and gives the design a lovely creative feel.
The navigation is also elegant and masterfully executed. I love the feel I get from the italics – they are big, bold, easy to see, easy to use and has a nice amount of whitespace around it. The makings of a perfect navigation.
Another unconventional thing in this design is placement of the logo/name on the right. In most cases when I see this done or when I try it myself I feel that the designer is trying too hard to be different. With this design it’s perfectly fitting. It doesn’t seem like the designer is thinking, “Oh everyone has their logo on the left, I’ll rebel and put it on the right.”. It actually fits perfectly to me.
My favourite element about the design is the artwork. Not only do we have cool artworks but it changes upon refresh keeping the site fresh every time.
Let’s talk typography: it’s great! The typography is all well kerned and has great leading making content quite legible. I think because of typography the site has a feel like AIGA but only in terms of type treatment.
Overall I love this design. Check it out for yourself at Sushi and Robots.
