I consistently say this, and at risk of sounding like a broken record I must say it again. Ad campaigns for social causes are among the most inspiring and creative advertising being done today. Here’s WWF Germany: Ice Sculptures proving this.
About the Ad:
Ice sculptures in the shape of humans are placed on the steps of the music hall in Gendarmenmarkt public square in Berlin September 2, 2009. Hosted by the German World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), 1,000 ice sculptures were positioned on the steps in the German capital at noon, to highlight climate change in the arctic region.
Artist: Nele Azevedo
While I think this ad is creative and enlightening I think there would have been more impact if these sculptures were polar bears. Humans don’t live in the arctic and we aren’t directly suffering the consequences of global warming – not yet anyway.
Among the creatures suffering are the polar bears who are losing hunting grounds because of the melting ice caps. If this continues it is the polar bears who will melt away out of existence. So if the artist really wanted to highlight the impact of this phenomenon then I think sculptures of Polar bears would have done that, not humans. The use of humans shows the impact of global warming a few years down the line while the use of Polar bears shows the impact today.
I don’t mean to take anything away from this work because it’s without a doubt creative and effective.
